  48. * 1.  OVERVIEW
  49. ************************************************************
  50. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility installs
  51. to the target system the Windows* INF files that outline to 
  52. the operating system how the Intel(R) chipset components will 
  53. be configured.  This is needed for the proper functioning of
  54. the following features:
  55.  
  56.    - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
  57.    - AGP Support
  58.    - IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
  59.    - SATA Storage Support
  60.    - USB Support
  61.    - Identification of Intel(R) chipset components in 
  62.      the Device Manager
  63.  
  64. This software can be installed in three modes: Interactive,
  65. Silent and Unattended Preload.  The Interactive Mode 
  66. requires user input during installation; the Silent Mode and
  67. Unattended Preload do not.  
  68.  
  69. Additionally, this software offers a set of command line
  70. flag options that enables extended installation functionality. 
  71. The command line flags are not case sensitive.  See Section 4 
  72. for detailed descriptions of these flags.
  73.  
  74. Important Note:
  75. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility is 
  76. distributed in two formats -- self extracting .EXE files
  77. (INFINST_xxx.EXE) or compressed .ZIP files (INFINST_xxx.ZIP). 
  78. Depending on which distribution format is being executed, 
  79. the command-line syntax may differ. See Section 4 for more details.

  82. ************************************************************
  83. * 2.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 
  84. ************************************************************
  85. 1.  The software included with this distribution package is 
  86.     designed to operate with the following chipset configurations:
  87.     
  88. Note: Please refer to the Release Notes for the list of 
  89.       supported chipsets.      
  90.               
  91. 2.  One of the following operating systems must be 
  92.     fully installed and running on the system
  93.     before installing this software:
  94.  
  95.     Windows* 98SE      4.10.2222  (Original Release)
  96.     Windows* Me          4.90.3000  (Original Release)
  97.     Windows* 2000      5.00.2195  (Original Release)
  98.     Windows* XP          5.10.2600  (Original Release)
  99.     Windows Server* 2003  5.20.3790  (Original Release)

  101.     To verify which operating system has been installed onto 
  102.     the target system, follow the steps below:
  103.  
  104.     a.  Click on Start.
  105.     b.  Select Settings.
  106.     c.  Select Control Panel.
  107.     d.  Double-click on the System icon.
  108.     e.  Click on the General system properties tab.
  109.     f.  Verify, which OS has been installed by reading
  110.         the System information.
  111.                               
  112. 3.  It is recommended that the software be installed on 
  113.     systems with at least 32MB of system memory when using 
  114.     Windows* 98SE and Windows* Me. Windows* 2000 and Windows* XP
  115.     require at least 64MB of system memory.
  116.  
  117. 4.  It is recommended that there be a minimum of 5MB of hard
  118.     disk space on the system in order to install this software.
  119.  
  120. 5.  Check the System Requirements.  The operating system 
  121.     must be fully installed and running on the system before
  122.     running this software.
  123.  
  124. 6.  Close any running applications.  Otherwise, you may
  125.     experience difficulties.
  126.  
  127. 7.  It is recommended that the Intel(R) Chipset Software 
  128.     Installation Utility be installed onto the target system 
  129.     prior to the installation of other drivers.
  130.  
  131.  
  132. Please check with your system provider to determine which 
  133. operating system and Intel(R) chipset are used in your system.

  137. * 3.  CONTENTS OF THE DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE

  139. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility package 
  140. contains the following items:
  141.

  156. * 4.  LIST OF AVAILABLE COMMAND LINE FLAG OPTIONS
  157. ************************************************************
  158. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility supports  
  159. several command line flags for various installation options. 
  160. All command line flags and parameters must be separated by a 
  161. space, except for the language code after the '-L' flag.
  162.  
  163. Due to the different distribution formats available for the
  164. Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility, the command
  165. line flag syntax may vary:
  166.  
  167. 1. Self-Extracting .EXE Distribution:
  168.       When installing this software using the .EXE 
  169.       distribution, an extra '-A' must be appended to the 
  170.       INFINST_xxx.EXE program call (i.e. INFINST_ENU.EXE -A) 
  171.       in order to successfully pass command line parameters.
  172.  
  173.    Note: The extra '-A' flag for the self-extracting .EXE 
  174.          package is DIFFERENT from the '-A' command line flag 
  175.          option described below, under Compressed .ZIP
  176.          Distribution.        
  177.  
  178.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  179.                described below, the installation program 
  180.                should be invoked as follows:  
  181.           
  182.                INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A (optional -P)
  183.  
  184. 2. Compressed .ZIP Distribution:
  185.       When installing this software using the .ZIP 
  186.       distribution, there is no need to append any extra 
  187.       flags to the SETUP.EXE program call in order to pass 
  188.       command line flags.
  189.  
  190.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  191.                described below, the installation program 
  192.                should be invoked as follows:  
  193.                         
  194.                SETUP.EXE -A (optional -P)
  195.  
  196. Below is a list of all the available command line flags that
  197. may be used with the program call.  Note that the '-L' and 
  198. the '-S' flags MUST be specified at the end of the command 
  199. line flag list.
  200.  
  201. Flag            Description
  202. ----            -----------
  203. -?              Help flag.  Displays the list of available 
  204.                 command line flags.  This parameter works in 
  205.                 the Interactive Mode only.  
  206.  
  207. -A              Extracts the INF files and README.TXT to 
  208.                 either "C:\Program Files\Intel\InfInst" or 
  209.                 the <Installation Path> directory specified 
  210.                 using the '-P' flag. The software will 
  211.                 NOT install these INF files to the system.  
  212.                 This flag can be combined only with the '-P' 
  213.                 flag option. All other options will be 
  214.                 ignored if the '-A' flag is specified. 
  215.                 This parameter works in either Silent Mode 
  216.                 or Interactive Mode.
  217.  
  218. -B              Automatically reboots the system after 
  219.                 installation. This flag is ignored if '-A' 
  220.                 flag is specified. This parameter works in 
  221.                 either Silent Mode or Interactive Mode.
  222.  
  223. -H<mode>
  224.                 This flag enables DMA Mode for an IDE device.
  225.  
  226. -L<LangCode>
  227.                 Forces the InstallShield* user interface to 
  228.                 display the specified language during setup.  
  229.                 Note that there should be NO spaces between 
  230.                 '-L' and the 4-digit language code (see 
  231.                 below). This flag and the '-S' flag must be 
  232.                 placed at the end of the command line flag 
  233.                 list. This parameter works in Interactive 
  234.                 Mode only.
  235.  
  236. -NOLIC
  237.                 This flag disables the license agreement
  238.                 dialogue box during installation. This parameter 
  239.                 works in Interactive Mode only.
  240.  
  241. -NOREAD
  242.                 This flag disables the readme display during
  243.                 installation. This parameter works in Interactive
  244.                 Mode only.
  245.  
  246. -NOWEL
  247.                 This flag disables the welcome screen during
  248.                 installation. This parameter works in the
  249.                 Interactive Mode only.
  250.  
  251. -OVER ALL    
  252.         This flag will update ALL INF drivers even if
  253.         third party drivers are currently installed. This
  254.         parameter works in Interactive Mode only.
  255.  
  256. -OVER FWH
  257.         This flag will update the Security drivers even
  258.         if a third party Security driver is currently
  259.         installed. This parameter works in Interactive
  260.         Mode only.
  261.  
  262. -OVER IDE    
  263.         This flag will update the Storage drivers even
  264.         if a third party Storage driver is currently
  265.         installed. This parameter works in Interactive
  266.         Mode only.
  267.  
  268. -OVER SMB    
  269.         This flag will update the LAN drivers even if
  270.         thrid party LAN drivers are currently installed.
  271.         This parameter works in Interactive Mode only.
  272.  
  273. -P <Installation Path>   
  274.                 Specifies the HDD location to which the INF 
  275.                 program files are copied.  If this flag is 
  276.                 not specified at the command line, the 
  277.                 <Installation Path> directory is by default 
  278.                 assumed to be:
  279.                 
  280.                    C:\Program Files\Intel\INFInst
  281.                 
  282.                 If this flag is used without the '-A' 
  283.                 option, only README.TXT will be copied to 
  284.                 <Installation Path>.  The directory name can 
  285.                 include spaces.  In this case, however, a 
  286.                 pair of double quotes (") must enclose the 
  287.                 directory name.  This parameter works in 
  288.                 either Silent Mode or Interactive Mode.
  289.  
  290. -S              Runs the Installer in Silent Mode.  No user 
  291.                 interface is displayed. This flag and the
  292.                 '-L' flag must be placed at the end of the 
  293.                 command line flag list.
  294.                 
  295. -SKIP<DevID>
  296.                 This flag will allow one or more devices to
  297.                 not be installed.
  298.  
  299. -intelide       
  300.                With this flag, the intelide.sys driver is 
  301.                installed instead of the default PCI storage 
  302.                driver, pciide.sys.  This flag only operates 
  303.                under Windows* 2000, Windows* XP, and Windows 
  304.                Server* 2003.  Under other OSÆs, this flag will 
  305.                be ignored and the default PCI storage driver, 
  306.                pciide.sys, will be installed.
  307.

  309.  
  310. Below are the language codes used with the '-L' flag:

  341. * 5.  CONTENTS OF THE EXTRACTED FILES
  342. ************************************************************
  343. INF files are copied to the hard disk drive after running 
  344. the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility 
  345. executable with a '-A' flag (i.e., "INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A" 
  346. or "SETUP.EXE -A").  The location of the INF files depends
  347. on whether a '-P' flag is specified along with the '-A' 
  348. flag:
  349.  
  350. 1.  If a '-P' flag is NOT specified, then the INF files are 
  351.     copied to the following directory:  
  352.        "C:\Program Files\Intel\INFINST"
  353. 2.  If a '-P' flag IS specified, then the INF files are 
  354.     copied to the location listed immediately after the 
  355.     '-P' flag.  
  356.  
  357.     See Section 4 for more information on flag usage.
  358.  
  359. After INF file extraction, the INF files and components are 
  360. copied to the <INF Extract Directory>.  These files and 
  361. components are categorized according to the Intel(R) 
  362. Chipset types. The following table summarizes the locations
  363. of the INF files, by chipsets:
  364.  
  365.    NOTE: The INF files are designed to update ONLY devices
  366.          not supported by the corresponding operating 
  367.          systems.
  368.  
  369.    NOTE: "<INF Extract Directory>" is abbreviated "<IED>"
  370.          in the remainder of this section.
  371.  
  372. For each subdirectory of <IED> (e.g., ICH, ICH2, etc), 
  373. the INF files are further classified according to 
  374. the operating systems they are designed for:
  375.  
  376.    Win98SE\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  377.                      Windows* 98SE ONLY.
  378.    Win2000\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  379.                      Windows* 2000 ONLY.
  380.    WinME\     --->  Contains INF files designed for
  381.                      Windows* Me ONLY.
  382.    WinXP\     --->  Contains INF files designed for
  383.                      Windows* XP ONLY.
  384.    Win2003\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  385.                      Windows Server* 2003 ONLY.
  386.  
  387. NOTES:                             
  388. 1.  INFPrelo.INF makes a CUSTOM.INF template that installs 
  389.     the INF files for Intel(R) chipsets during OS setup.  
  390.     OEMs can incorporate this file into the SETUP directory 
  391.     for the OEM Preload Kit.
  392.     (Refer to Section 8 for more details.)

  395. ************************************************************
  396. * 6.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN INTERACTIVE MODE
  397. ************************************************************
  398. 1.  Verify that all system requirements have been met as 
  399.     described in section 2.
  400.  
  401. 2.  Run the InstallShield* installation program:
  402.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE
  403.        Compressed .ZIP distribution: SETUP.EXE
  404.  
  405. 3.  You will be prompted to agree to the license agreement.  
  406.     If you do not agree, the Installer will exit before 
  407.     extracting any files.
  408.     
  409. 4.  Follow the on-screen instructions and use the default
  410.     settings to complete the setup, once the operating
  411.     system has rebooted.
  412.  
  413. 5.  This completes the installation of the Intel(R) Chipset 
  414.     Software Installation Utility.  
  415.  
  416.  
  417. ************************************************************
  418. * 7.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN SILENT MODE
  419. ************************************************************
  420. 1.  Verify that all system requirements have been met as 
  421.     described in section 2.
  422.  
  423. 2.  Run the InstallShield* installation program:
  424.     For silent install with auto-reboot:
  425.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: 
  426.        INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -b -s
  427.        Compressed .ZIP distribution:
  428.        SETUP.EXE -b -s
  429.     - OR -
  430.     For silent install without auto-reboot:
  431.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: 
  432.        INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -s
  433.        Compressed .ZIP distribution: SETUP.EXE -s

  435. 3.  The utility will perform the necessary updates and 
  436.     record the installation status in the following system 
  437.     registry key:
  438.         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\INFInst
  439.  
  440. 4.  If the utility was invoked with the "-b" flag, the 
  441.     system will automatically reboot if the update was
  442.     successful.
  443.  
  444.     NOTE:  The system MUST be rebooted for all device 
  445.     updates to take effect.
  446.  
  447. 5.  To determine whether the install was successful, verify 
  448.     the "install" value in the registry key specified in 
  449.     Step 3.
  450.  
  451. 6.  In Silent Mode the utility will not display the license
  452.     agreement. When using Silent Mode the license agreement,
  453.     license.txt, will be placed in the following folder:
  454.         Program Files/Intel/INFInst folder.
  455.     Please read this agreement.
  456.

  483. * 8.  INSTALLING THE INF FILES PRIOR TO OS INSTALLATION
  484. ************************************************************
  485. 1.  Copy the OS installation files from the setup 
  486.     directory to a directory on the hard disk. This 
  487.     procedure requires a minimum of 5MB of hard disk space.
  488.     It is important to make sure there is enough disk space 
  489.     before beginning the copy process. This can be done by
  490.     opening 'My Computer' and then right clicking on the
  491.     correct drive and selecting 'Properties'. The
  492.     directories shall be referred to as follows:
  493.  
  494.       Windows* 98SE :  <WIN98SE Setup Directory>
  495.       Windows* Me   :  <WINMe Setup Directory>
  496.       Windows* 2000 :  <WIN2000 Setup Directory>
  497.       Windows* XP   :  <WINXP Setup Directory>
  498.       Windows Server* 2003 :  <WIN2003 Setup Directory>

  502. * 8A.  INSTALLING THE Windows* 98SE/WINDOWS* Me 
  503. *      INF FILES PRIOR TO OS INSTALLATION
  504. ************************************************************
  505. NOTE: The Windows* 98SE or Windows* Me OEM 
  506.       Preload Kit distribution CD contains a setup directory 
  507.       with all the base OS setup files (*.CAB) and the 
  508.       installation program (SETUP.EXE).
  509.  
  510. The name of the directory may vary depending on the 
  511. distribution CD (e.g., \WIN98SE\).   
  512.  
  513. 1.  Copy the Windows* 98SE INF files from
  514.     <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\Win98SE to the setup 
  515.     directory identified in Step 1 above, if you are 
  516.     preloading Windows* 98SE.
  517.        -or-
  518.     Copy the Windows* Me INF files from
  519.     <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\WinME to the setup 
  520.     directory identified, if you are preloading Windows* Me.

  522.     Note: XXXX is the directory name for the chipset of 
  523.           interest.  See Section 8 for more details.

  525. 2.  Run SETUP.EXE to install Windows* 98SE or Windows* Me.

  528. * 8B.  INSTALLING THE WINDOWS* 2000 INF FILES PRIOR TO
  529. *      OS INSTALLATION

  531. NOTE: The Windows* 2000 OEM Preload Kit distribution CD
  532.       contains a setup directory with all the base OS setup
  533.       files and installation programs (WINNT.EXE and
  534.       WINNT32.EXE).

  537. distribution CD (e.g., \I386\).

  540. 1.  Create the following directory structure under the 
  541.     <WIN2000 Setup Directory>:

  546.     <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\Win2000 to the directory

  559. 4.  Copy the Windows* 2000 INF files AND the catalog files 
  560.     (.CAT) from <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\Win2000 to the 
  561.     directory created in Step 4 above:

  563.        <WIN2000 Setup Directory>\$OEM$\$1\drivers\IntelINF
  564.  
  565.     Note: XXXX is the directory name for the chipset of 
  566.           interest.  See Section 8 for more details.

  568. 5.  Either modify the default Windows* 2000 installation
  569.     answer file, UNATTEND.TXT, located in <WIN2000 Setup 
  570.     Directory>, or create a customized answer file.  The
  571.     answer file must include the following information:
  572.    
  573.        [Unattended]
  574.        OemPreinstall = Yes
  575.        OemPnPDriversPath="drivers\IntelINF"
  576.  
  577.     A sample answer file for preloading the Intel(R) Chipset
  578.     Software Installation utility files is available: 
  579.     <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\Win2000\INFAnswr.TXT
  580.     
  581.     For more information about Windows* 2000 answer files 
  582.     and unattended installations, please refer to the 
  583.     Microsoft* Windows* 2000 Guide to Unattended Setup.  For
  584.     more information about the \$OEM$ folder, see the 
  585.     Microsoft Windows* 2000 OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) 
  586.     User Guide, if you are a computer manufacturer. 
  587.     Otherwise, see the Microsoft Windows* 2000 Deployment 
  588.     Guide.

  590. 6.  Run "WINNT.EXE /u:<answer file name> /s:<WIN2000 Setup 
  591.     Directory>" to install Windows* 2000.

  595. * 8C.  INSTALLING THE WINDOWS* XP INF FILES PRIOR TO

  1052.             Utility the USB keyboard and mouse will stop functioning. 
  1053.             This problem only occurs when using Windows XP with SP1 on 
  1054.             a system configured with a USB keyboard and/or mouse. This
  1055.             condition is temporary until a system reset.
  1056.  
  1057. Solution1:  A recommended fix has been provided by Microsoft in Knowlege
  1058.             Base article(822603). For additional information, please refer
  1059.             to the KB article located at:

  1062.         Please use the following installation procedures: 
  1063.                 - Windows XP installed with SP1
  1064.         - QFE (822603) installed
  1065.               - Latest Chipset Utility Software installed.

  1067. Solution2:  The command line flag "-Skip <DevID>" can be used with the 
  1068.             Chipset Installation Utility program to cause the USB2 driver 
  1069.             not to be installed. The DevID's for ICH4/ICH5 are 24CD/24DD.
  1070.             This will cause the USB2 controller to have a yellow exclamation 
  1071.             point in Device Manager (Usually located under Other Devices and 
  1072.             identified as "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller"). To install 
  1073.             the USB2 driver right-click this entry, select update driver, 
  1074.             and allow the system to install automatically. When completed,
  1075.             nothing more should be required.
  1076.             
  1077.  
  1078.  
  1079. Issue:        After installing the Intel(R) Extreme Graphics Driver 
  1080.         to utilize the integrated graphics capabilities of 
  1081.         the Intel(R) chipset, software support for the AGP 
  1082.         function of the chipset is disabled in systems using 
  1083.         the Windows* 98, Windows* 98SE, and Windows* ME 
  1084.         operating systems.
  1085.         
  1086. Solution:   If a user wishes to install an external AGP graphics 
  1087.         card subsequent to installing the Intel(R) Extreme 
  1088.         Graphics Driver on a system using a Windows* 98, 
  1089.         Windows* 98SE, or Windows* Me operating system, 
  1090.         the Intel(R) Chipset INF Utility must be re-installed 
  1091.         to re-enable software support for AGP functionality. 
  1092.         (In addition, the driver associated with the graphics
  1093.         card must also be installed.)
  1094.         
  1095.  
  1096. Issue:      System locks up during Device Manager Remove or 
  1097.             during restart.
  1098.  
  1099. Solution:   System lockup can occur during Restart as a 
  1100.             result of several possible system issues.  In 
  1101.             the event of system lockup, restart the machine 
  1102.             and view Device Manager.  If devices are listed 
  1103.             properly and the system experiences no further 
  1104.             problems, then the .INF file restore process was 
  1105.             successful.  If devices are not configured 
  1106.             correctly, try re-running the procedures 
  1107.             outlined in Section 3.

  1109.             If this does not fix the issue or further 
  1110.             issues are experienced, reinstall the 
  1111.             operating system.
